In the United States, the customary response to the question “How are you?” is usually, “I’m doing fine.”

If you stop and think about it, it’s a little strange. Not “I’m doing great,” and not “It’s been a difficult week, but I’m grateful to be here.” Just… “fine.”

Of course, it’s only a saying, but I sometimes wonder if it reflects something deeper. I think it might reflect a slow drift toward merely getting by in life.

When we were young, none of us dreamed of living mediocre lives. We imagined making a difference. We hoped to love deeply, to experience joy, and to see extraordinary things happen. But over time, the weight of responsibility and the relentless grind of life can slowly reduce us to survival mode. Even those serving in ministry are not immune to this.

Thankfully, Scripture offers us a way out of this “just fine” existence, and it doesn’t require luxury, escape, or a change in circumstances. Listen to the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Paul gives us three commands: rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in every circumstance. While they are distinct instructions, they all grow from the same root: gratitude toward God.

Joy is born when we recognize what God has already done for us in Jesus. Prayer becomes natural when we understand our dependence on Him. Thanksgiving flows from the realization that we have received far more grace than we deserve.

So how do we cultivate this kind of appreciation?

  1. Lift your eyes away from yourself and your problems and turn them toward God. Joy cannot survive in a self-consumed heart.
  2. Reflect on the salvation God has given you through Jesus. There is no greater gift in all the world.
  3. Thank God for His Word. Like the psalmist in Psalm 119:162, learn to say, “I rejoice in your word like one who discovers great treasure.”
  4. Recognize the people God has placed in your life. Friends and family are not accidental. They are gifts of love from God.

No matter what challenges you face today, you do not have to settle for merely being “fine.” Through gratitude, God invites you into something far more fulfilling.

Let’s give Him our appreciation today.

Blessings,
