I came across a recent blog by executive coach Justin Wright. In it, he discusses seven types of rest that leaders need to prevent burnout. He cites a study by Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith that might help answer the question “Why do I still feel exhausted after a full night’s sleep?” Ever been there?
Here are the types of rest we all need to stay at our best:
- Physical rest – when your body whispers before it starts to scream
- Mental rest – because your mind needs space to breathe between thoughts
- Sensory rest – in a world that never stops beeping, pinging, and glowing
- Creative rest – to refill your well of inspiration and wonder
- Emotional rest – because carrying everyone’s weight gets heavy
- Social rest – stepping back from connections that drain your spirit
- Spiritual rest – reconnecting with what gives your life meaning and purpose
Jesus understood the need for rest, especially spiritual rest and rest from the busyness of life. He told His followers:
“…Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest…”
Matthew 11: 28 NLT
The Sabbath was instituted so people could come away from their busy activities, rest, and focus on the Lord and His goodness.
So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world.
Hebrews 4: 9-10 NLT
Justin Wright says showing up for yourself isn’t selfish. It’s essential. He then explains why:
Your family needs your presence.
Your team needs your energy.
Your work needs your clarity.
But first, you need to rest.
The world doesn’t need another burnt-out hero.
It needs you at your best.
The Lord needs you at your best, too. Take time to rest, for your good and for the Lord’s great purpose.
God’s best,
